About this Collection

The OhioLINK Electronic Reference Books collection contains special-topic reference books – encyclopedias, handbooks, biographical collections, guides – from ABC-CLIO, an educational reference publisher.

You can Search the entire collection of reference books for all occurrences of a particular word or phrase. Or, if you know a specific reference book that you want to consult, use Browse to locate the book by title.

Search by Word or Phrase

You can search the entire collection of reference books by word or phrase.

• Use the pull-down menu to specify where to search; then enter a single word or phrase in the box.

  Full Text: searches words anywhere within the full content of the reference books
  Chapter Title: searches words in titles of chapters or sections within the books
  Book Title: searches words in book titles
  Author: searches words in author names

• Two or more words together are automatically searched as a phrase of adjacent words (no need to use quotation marks).

  prime interest rate finds the exact phrase prime interest rate

• Every word is searched, including and, or, not.

  family and medical leave finds the exact phrase family and medical leave

• Use asterisk at end of word stem to find plural forms and other variations.

  myth* finds myth, mythical, mythology, myths, etc.

Basic Search: to look for a single word or phrase.

Search in: Chapter Title Find: bretton woods	the exact phrase Bretton Woods in the chapter titles of any books
Search in: Author Find: kinnear	Search authors by surname only, or any other distinctive name. Author names are given in direct order, so use a full name only if you know exactly how it is given, e.g., Karen L. Kinnear.

Boolean Search: to combine two or three words or phrases using Boolean operators AND, OR, NOT.

Search in: Chapter Title Find: civil war and russia*	chapter titles that contain the phrase civil war and also the word Russia (or Russian, etc.)
Search in: Author Find: burns or byrnes	author names spelled either Burns or Byrnes
Search in: Book Title Find: money or monetary and encyclopedia	book titles that contain either (money or monetary) and encyclopedia

Proximity Search: to look for terms based on whether they occur (or do not occur) within a specified distance of each other.

Search in: Full Text Find: school followed by voucher* <80	school followed by within 80 characters voucher or vouchers
Search in: Chapter Title Find: edith near sitwell <40	Edith and Sitwell, within 40 characters of each other, in either order, within a chapter title
Search in: Full Text Find: war near poverty <40 near johnson <120	(war within 40 characters of poverty), and that result within 120 characters of Johnson

Book Search: to look for books based on bibliographic information – title, author, and citation data such as publisher or date.

Search History: View your previous searches during this session. From this page, you can resubmit a search to get its results again.

Search Results

Search results are grouped by book. You can sort results by author, title, date, or frequency of occurrences of your term.

Results Details: Shows each occurrence found of your term, highlighted within an excerpt of surrounding text. Click chapter or section title to view that portion of the book.

Table of Contents: Displays bibliographic data about the book and its entire list of chapters and sections. Click any chapter or section to go directly there.

From the Table of Contents, use the box Search this Text to submit a search just within this book. The Table of Contents also displays the option to View Entire Text, which allows you to view the entire book as one file in your browser.

Bookbag

Click Add to Bookbag to save a book in a temporary space. From the Bookbag, you can search within the set of books that you have chosen. You can also e-mail, display, or save bibliographic information for books that you have chosen.

Email Contents: e-mail citations of selected books.

Download Contents: display or save citations of selected books.

Empty Contents: empties the bookbag.
