FAQ for New Employees at Member Institutions

OhioLINK is the consortium that serves higher education libraries and the State Library of Ohio throughout the State of Ohio.  It provides access to 47 million library items, 10,000 electronic journals, and 140 research databases serving 90 member institutions.  OhioLINK has an annual budget of $6,100,000.  The Ohio State University serves as OhioLINK's fiscal agent.

Committees that Govern OhioLINK

  • Library Advisory Council (LAC):  Reviews and approves all policies for carrying out the OhioLINK program as proposed by the standing committees.  Discusses and approves major funding measures.  Participates in strategic planning.  Consists of library directors from the Charter Universities (all public universities and Case Western Reserve University and the University of Dayton), and representatives from the independent colleges and the two year colleges.
  • Lead Implementors:  Overall responsibilities for maintaining OhioLINK policies and procedures on local Innovative systems.  Meet to share information and to participate in ongoing training opportunities.  Consists of library systems librarians.
  • Cooperative Information Resources Management Committee (CIRM):  Explores and makes recommendations to the Library Advisory Council on new databases and publishers that OhioLINK should consider acquiring.  Focuses on cooperative resource management issues and recommends new policies and procedures.  Consists of collection development and acquisitions librarians.
  • Database Management and Standards Committee (DMSC):  Maintains quality standards for the Central Catalog.  Creates policies and procedures concerning all metadata for all members to follow.  Consists of cataloging librarians.
  • InterCampus Services Committee (ICS):  Recommends policies and procedures for state-wide resource sharing.  Coordinates operations among local sites and between local/central site.  Oversees document delivery systems.  Consists of circulation and interlibrary loan librarians.
  • User Services Committee (USC):  Provides development input for all user interfaces developed or maintained by OhioLINK.  Reviews systems and recommends enhancements.  Organizes and provides training for both OhioLINK and vendor-based systems.  Participates in promotional efforts.  Manages OhioLINK participation in the statewide chat reference service.  Consists of public service librarians.



How do new librarians get appointed to a committee or get to participate more in OhioLINK?

Committees are structured for wide representation from the state universities and from all types of academic libraries.  The best way to get involved is to let the chair of one of the committees know that you are interested, and they will find you something to do (with permission from your own institution).  There are many subcommittees or taskforces for each of the major committees listed above.
