Resource Challenges in Academic Libraries Community of Interest

Statement of Purpose

The Resource Challenges in Academic Libraries Community of Interest is interested in the investigation, discussion, and best practices of other academic libraries' resource challenge policies and general statements concerning patron challenges. This is currently a larger issue for public libraries. There is the possibility of this becoming an increased issue for academic libraries as well. This group will provide space to have conversations about experiences with book challenges or resource reconsiderations; gather guidelines, policies, statements, best practices, webinars, etc., and discuss additional strategies academic libraries can employ now.

The Resource Challenges in Academic Libraries Community of Interest may be:

  1. Short-term - 6-9 months of monthly meetings. The end product could be a round table or presentation at ALAO’s 2023 conference or other appropriate Ohio professional development opportunity. This would be a way to get the conversation started for Ohio academic libraries and a way for folks to connect on the topic.
  2. Long-term - ongoing, quarterly meetings where there are informal discussions about resource challenge experiences, journal articles and other input. This COI could also consider consortia-wide guidelines or support systems for when libraries do experience resource challenges.
  3. On-demand - when there is a challenge at an OhioLINK library, this COI could act as a support group for that particular library/issue from a third-party perspective. This approach is recommended in best practices (i.e., gather your stakeholders before you have a problem), but would depend on group interest.
