Criteria and steps for hiring a new OhioLINK eTutor

A candidate can apply to be an OhioLINK eTutor anytime there is a need throughout the year. Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in a related field and demonstrate tutoring and online tutoring experience.  Every participating institution has an appointed coordinator (called a campus coordinator) that is responsible for communicating the institution’s eTutoring needs with perspective candidates and assisting candidates throughout the hiring process.

 Steps for hiring a new eTutor

  1. Candidate completes the appropriate online OhioLINK eTutor questionnaire to express their interest in becoming a new eTutor for their participating institution.  Candidate responses will be reviewed to ensure candidate has read the eTutoring job description, meets criteria of an OhioLINK eTutor, can communicate ideas clearly (and with grammatical precision for writing eTutors), has a laptop and internet access, and can meet the availability and expectations of the institution.   Responses to the questionnaire are sent to the OhioLINK eTutoring program coordinator and will be shared with the institution’s campus coordinator as part of the candidate’s application to become an eTutor.

  2. Campus coordinator collects and reviews documents from the candidate via email to confirm candidate is qualified to be an eTutor.  eTutor candidates must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and provide their campus coordinator with the following documents:
    1. current resume - pdf format, checking for proof of bachelor’s degree & previous tutoring experience.
    2. current transcript -in pdf format.
    3. statement of educational or academic tutoring philosophyfor all candidates.  Writing eTutor candidates are specifically asked to treat this as a 2-page writing sample using the MLA format.
    4. two professional references - on letterhead, that attest to the candidate’s ability to tutor.
    5. completed eTutor questionnaire – see #1 above
    6. completed aptitude survey - for drop-in eTutor candidates only, choose all that apply.

  3. If candidate qualifies with the institution, the Campus Coordinator will email the OhioLINK eTutoring program coordinator an OhioLINK eTutoring a statement of endorsement.  The statement may be brief and should include the reasons the campus coordinator personally thinks the candidate will make a good eTutor for their institution.  Please include a resume, transcript, aptitude survey and one additional supporting document.  Additional supplemental documentation should be made available upon request.
  4. The OhioLINK program coordinator and quality assurance coordinator will review the application to ensure candidate is a good fit for OhioLINK eTutoring.  They will verify that the candidate has a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and will review both the campus coordinator’s statement of endorsement, candidate’s answers to the questionnaire, and supplemental documentation (as needed).
  5. If candidate qualifies, the candidate is then enrolled for OhioLINK eTutor training & evaluation.  Writing eTutor training is a 4 week self-paced course with quizzes, writing samples and feedback. Successful completion of the training program must include the endorsement of our training Quality Assurance Coordinator to participate in the eTutoring program.  Drop-in eTutoring training is being developed and all drop-in eTutors will be required to complete it at a future date.
  6. If a candidate successfully completes the OhioLINK eTutor training and receives the recommendation of the Quality Assurance Coordinator they are approved to begin tutoring!  
  7. The campus coordinator will contact the candidate once a decision has been made.  The campus coordinator is responsible for communications with candidates including their application status and decision.  OhioLINK eTutoring program coordinator supports the campus coordinator with tutor-related training and onboarding and training after a decision has been rendered. 

 

Steps for becoming an eTutor candidate eligible for hire at any/all interested perspective institutions

We also invite candidates with a bachelor’s degree and previous tutoring experience who wish to be openly considered for an eTutoring position with any/all inquiring institutions to complete the following steps:

  1. Email the program coordinator at eTutoring@ohiolink.edu that you are interested in eTutoring and that you agree to have your supplemental documents, questionnaire, and any self-assessment results kept on file with eTutoring for one year and shared with inquiring current and perspective institutions.
  2. Email the following related documents to eTutoring@ohiolink.edu:
    1. cover letter – please include your subject(s) of expertise, your intended availability, and any other relevant information.
    2. current resume - pdf format
    3. current transcript -pdf format
    4. statement of educational or academic tutoring philosophy – for all candidates.  Writing eTutor candidates are specifically asked to treat this as a 2-page writing sample using the MLA format.
    5. two professional references - on letterhead, that attest to the candidate’s ability to tutor.
