eTutor Selection and Assessment

eTutors are hired and managed directly by their institution. As such, Campus Coordinators, with support from the OhioLINK Program Manager, are responsible for communicating with and guiding eTutor candidates through this and local tutor review and hiring steps. The steps outlined here are in addition to local review and hiring procedures.

Steps for selecting a new OhioLINK eTutor

  1. The Campus Coordinator collects the following documents from the candidate: 

    • Current resume (.pdf) indicating higher education degrees and previous tutoring experience
    • Current transcript (.pdf)
    • 1 - 2 page statement of educational or academic tutoring philosophy. Writing candidates should treat this as a 2-page writing sample using the MLA format.
    • Two professional and/or academic references that attest to the candidate’s ability to tutor.
       
  2. The Campus Coordinator directs the candidate to complete and submit the applicable candidate questionnaire.

  3. The Campus Coordinator directs Drop-In candidates to complete the applicable assessments below and email their response(s) to etutoring@ohiolink.edu. Please direct the candidate to include their name and institution in the message.
     

    Business Math, Calculus, Stats Nursing or related   Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy & Physiology, Physics 
     

  4. The OhioLINK Program Coordinator will forward submitted assessments to the institution's Campus Coordinator for review. 

  5. The Campus Coordinator reviews all submitted materials and determines whether or not the candidate meets their local criteria for a tutor.

  6. If the candidate does NOT meet local criteria, the Campus Coordinator will follow up with the candidate directly. 

  7. If candidate meets local critera for hiring a tutor, the Campus Coordinator should submit the following to etutoring@ohiolink.edu

    •  A brief statement of endorsement for the candidate that includes the reasons the campus coordinator thinks the candidate will make a good eTutor for their institution.
    • The candidate's resume, transcript, aptitude survey, and at least one reference.
       
  8. The OhioLINK Program Coordinator and Quality Assurance Coordinator will review the submitted materials to ensure candidate is a good fit for OhioLINK eTutoring.
     
  9. The OhioLINK Program Coordinator will notify the Campus Coordinator with the decision and the next steps.
     
  10. Accepted candidates are enrolled for OhioLINK eTutor training & evaluation
     
    • Writing eTutor training is a 4 week self-paced course with quizzes, writing samples and feedback. 
    • Drop-in eTutoring training is being developed and all drop-in eTutors will be required to complete it at a future date. Until this training is available, OhioLINK may request a brief interview for drop-in candidates.
       
  11. Upon successful completion of training, the Program Coordinator will contact the Campus Coordinator to confirm approval. 
     
  12. The Campus Coordinator, as the hiring manager, will contact the candidate to award them the eTutoring position. 
     
  13. The Program Coordinator will work with the Campus Coordinator and eTutor to onboard and schedule the new eTutor.
