Frederick joins OhioLINK as systems librarian

COLUMBUS, Ohio (May 11, 2017) – OhioLINK is pleased to welcome a new member to its team. Nichole Frederick joined OhioLINK on May 1, 2017 as the OhioLINK systems librarian.

In this role, Frederick will work closely with OhioLINK’s coordinator of catalogs, with personnel from OH-TECH, and with OhioLINK member institutions to assist in planning, implementing, and managing central library catalog functions. She will provide support for OhioLINK’s library catalogs and the integration of local systems; the print lending system; and the OhioLINK link resolver and associated services.

Ohio University, OhioLINK Awarded LSTA Grant

Ohio University, in partnership with OhioLINK, has received a $46,207 Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant for a pilot project geared toward the next generation of mass print storage.

This pilot project will use data analysis to identify, select and preserve unique print materials from Ohio’s Southeast Regional Depository (SEORD) to relocate approximately 40,000 unique and uncommonly held print monographs.

Ohio Selected as a Digital Public Library of America Service Hub

OhioLINK is pleased to announce its participation in the “Ohio Digital Network,” a statewide Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) Service Hub, which was approved by the DPLA on Oct. 4. As a service hub, the Ohio Digital Network will be the on-ramp to DPLA for the state’s library, archives and cultural heritage organizations, ensuring that local digital collections can be discovered as part of this groundbreaking national program.

OhioLINK takes steps toward textbook affordability

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Nov. 14, 2016) – To contribute to statewide efforts on college affordability, OhioLINK will be joining the University of Minnesota’s Open Textbook Network (OTN), a consortium of colleges and universities working to advance open textbook initiatives. 

OTN supports the Open Textbook Library, a program promoting “real, complete textbooks licensed so teachers and students can freely use, adapt and distribute the material. Open textbooks can be downloaded at no cost or printed inexpensively.”  Regional training workshops will soon follow.

Over the past year, the Open Textbook Network has grown from seven to more than 25 members. These members comprise 84 institutions nationwide.

OhioLINK ETD Center Adds Retrospective Batch Upload

Columbus, Ohio – The OhioLINK Electronic Theses and Dissertation (ETD) Center database is about to get a major influx of content to further benefit students, faculty and researchers.

On September 7, the ETD Center added a new capability called Retrospective Batch Upload, in which OhioLINK member libraries and graduate schools can upload older theses and dissertations in bulk. Previously, ETDs could be uploaded on an individual basis only.

This new feature allows the member libraries and graduate schools to add digital versions of older paper-based theses and dissertations to the Center, and expand access to them beyond the hard copies that are currently in a campus library or archive.

OhioLINK launches upgraded Electronic Journal Center

OhioLINK has officially launched its significantly upgraded Electronic Journal Center (EJC), giving OhioLINK students, faculty and researchers enhanced access to a vast, rich array of high-quality research journals.

The EJC is a database that contains 26 million full-text articles from more than 11,000 academic journals from top scholarly publishers, academic societies and university presses. The project was made possible through a $1 million capital expenditure from the State of Ohio funded through the Ohio Department of Higher Education’s Technology Initiatives.

OhioLINK Joins National Digital Stewardship Alliance

OhioLINK has been approved for membership in the National Digital Stewardship Alliance (NDSA) by the Digital Library Federation Coordinating Committee. Being part of the NDSA is one of many components of OhioLINK’s new Digital Preservation Program for shared digital resources. Membership allows OhioLINK to be part of a national group of organizations partnering to ensure the stewardship and preservation of digital resources.

Judy Cobb of OhioLINK will participate in both the Standards and Practices and the Infrastructure Working Groups to ensure OhioLINK has a spot at the table as policies and tools are designed around digital stewardship of the digital resources shared by Ohio’s academic community.

OhioLINK is excited to welcome Judith Cobb to our team as the Digital Curation Coordinator. This position will work closely with the Manager of Member and User Services to ensure long-term access to digital content managed by OhioLINK. In her new position, Cobb will manage OhioLINK’s implementation of the Ex Libris Rosetta digital preservation platform and develop related policies and procedures.

OhioLINK Adopts Ex Libris Rosetta for Digital Preservation

OhioLINK is pleased to announce the selection of the Ex Libris Rosetta digital management and preservation solution. Rosetta will ensure long-term access to the OhioLINK Electronic Journal Collection (EJC), Electronic Book Collection (EBC), Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETD) Center, and Digital Resource Commons (DRC) collections.

OhioLINK sought a preservation system based on the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) reference model that could integrate with its existing content management systems and support a wide range of processing workflows. As a large and complex consortium, OhioLINK required a solution that could be implemented and maintained in a way that suits a wide variety of content.

Librarians from Miami University and the University of Cincinnati, with support from INFOhio and OhioLINK, are providing the participants of the Young Women's Summer Institute (YWSI) with hands-on instruction in using digital library information resources and presenting their research. Students will use INFOhio's ISearch to find STEM materials at appropriate reading levels that are relevant to their research. Participants will also learn about data management and website creation as they prepare for their presentations.
